Engineering Sciences – CTE Program of Study

  • Engineering Sciences – CTE Program of Study (pdf)

The Engineering Sciences program is designed to develop a student’s understanding of engineering problem solving and design practices. The program will prepare students to apply fundamental scientific and mathematical laws and principles relevant to engineering and technology. Students will learn to use systems of measurement, apply engineering technologies and tools as well as learn about the different disciplines and opportunities within the field of engineering. The program is designed and delivered as a coherent sequence of experiences using technical instruction, academic foundations, experiential learning, supervised occupational experience and leadership and personal development through the Career and Technical Student Organization, SkillsUSA.

Engineering Sciences is offered at Desert Ridge High and Mesquite High.

How has CTE positively impacted your high school experience?
CTE has offered a break from regular courses to focus on a specific interest of mine and learn the skills to pursue those interests. Because it's more specialized, we had access to more unique resources and these particular courses helped me learn about the reality of becoming an engineer.

What are some skills that you’ve gained from Engineering?
These courses have offered a lot of skills, such as engineering notebook notation, inventor auto CAD, computer programming basics, and the engineering process of developing a solution to a real-world problem. We also had some work with digital electronics and robotics.

Do you have a favorite memory, lesson, or class project?
My favorite project was designing a solar-powered car that had to have the wiring set up to maximize distance and speed while accounting for terrain and power drain from a hydro cell.

Do you have a favorite memory, lesson, or class project in Engineering?
I loved doing all of the projects, but some of my favorites have been the carnival game project. This was our first project and I had a really fun group. I also love making the Rube Goldberg machine. It is complicated and satisfying when it works.

Why would you recommend Engineering to your peers?
I would recommend this course because it is fun and we get to do a lot of things. If you like making machines while having fun with friends, Engineering is for you.
