Fee foes smell blood

Until now people wishing to enter higher education have had a comparatively easy time finding grants for first degrees, and now the next generation is objecting at being called on to find, at most, Pounds 1,000 a year, of the cost of tuition.

This will be means-tested so those from the poorest backgrounds will still have, quite rightly, a free ride. We are still luckier than some. American colleagues have explained to me that their institutions demand full fees from year one, leaving an average debt after three years of roughly $30,000 - which is approximately Pounds 18,000 to Pounds 19,000.

If such an idea were to be introduced over here people really would have something to complain about.
