Your use of the word "unpopular" to characterise subjects threatened with closure at Durham University is misleading ("Top universities face cash crisis", THES, June ). The linguistics department has no problem filling its yearly quota of 37 undergraduate places.

Demand outstrips supply in this department, ranked fourth by The THES among linguistics departments in the UK.
