The matters raised by President Thabo Mbeki (Opinion, November 12) will resonate with all those with experience of African universities.
The UK is in a prime position to help to open up the new era.
Among areas that need addressing are the following: (1) Citizens of the Commonwealth should be given preferential treatment at our universities: for example, there is no reduction in the fees charged for taught MSc courses that would be valuable for young African graduates; (2) While we biochemists have raised funds to allow young African scientists to attend courses in Europe, we should also pay attention to the needs of more senior scientists; (3) Funds are required to help service African organisations that encourage cooperation across national boundaries; (4) Better links are needed between English and French-speaking scientists in West Africa.
