As regards Jonathan Bate's remarks about the role of facts in literary studies ("Navigate the circus of fancy with fact", THES , August 1), as a teacher of English I always believed ("theory" notwithstanding) literature should be about what an author has to say and how they say it.
Facts supply background information.
