The illustrations accompanying the article on the mess of funding arrangements in the different parts of the UK filled me with dismay ("Toll barriers", 25 August): England is urban and modern; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland rural and therefore not modern.
With an editorial mindset like that, I was surprised not to find phrases such as "Celtic fringe" in the article.
