I am shocked to hear that the University of Glasgow is considering making broad cuts in language instruction, particularly the Slavic languages. One of the reasons for Glasgow's global repute is the distinction of its Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies.

The move would affect the training of researchers in other parts of the humanities, essential for those who seek to conduct work that's sensitive to the nuances of place and time.

The mastery of foreign language is a fundamental building block of producing graduates who can navigate the complex global economy. Losing so many languages can only undermine the university's mission. I urge Glasgow to reconsider this precipitous move.
