There is nothing new in Malcolm Grant heading a health quango alongside his "day job" at UCL. In the mid-1990s, I lectured at the former University of Luton. Its vice-chancellor, Tony Wood, achieved notoriety by working an eight-day week - five days at Luton and three as chair of a local NHS trust. However, unlike Grant, Wood reportedly pocketed both pay cheques. At least in this sense, the former is to be commended for his actions.
