Your article "Journal index fuels RAE fears" (April 7) contains a number of inaccuracies. The article refers to a "Europe-wide citation index", but the European Reference Index for the Humanities is a reference index only.
The European Commission is funding the Humanities in the European Research Area and the European Science Foundation on the understanding that they will produce a research infrastructure tool to give researchers in Europe information about journals across the humanities in different countries. The Arts and Humanities Research Council is not the driver behind this: we are simply facilitating the UK input.
Philip Esler
Chief executive, Arts and Humanities Research Council
