Alison Wolf's view of Marx's faded relevance is too narrow. My English literature students are interested in Marxism not because they find it a political gospel, but because it offers a bolder perspective and a way of comprehending literature in its diverse social roles. Not surprisingly, this is appreciated as an exciting alternative to the study of texts in isolation.
