I was astonished to read James Tooley describe a professor from Newcastle University as "better than" a professor from Luton ("Is an easy chair culture taking over campus?", December 17). On what basis does he make this assertion? Not on personal know-ledge of the national and international standing of research professors at this university. There is a small number of professors at Luton - and every one is an expert in their field. Is that not the basis on which a chair is awarded?

It would be preferable if statements about individuals and institutions were informed by evidence.
