Last week's feature by Kenneth Good, professor of political studies at the University of Botswana, on the case for democratic reform ("What use is a silent witness?", May ) was a refreshing read, especially to somebody who works outside the university sector.
It is reassuring to learn that not all academics are immersed in the institutional politics of the kind routinely practised at Laurie Taylor's University of Poppleton, with their eyes steadfastly fixed on maximising their own pay and status and Lucky Jim-ing it up the promotional ladder.
