Isn't the death of the original, ambitious PhD just a case of "joined-up thinking", by which students are perfectly prepared for a profession where pressure to publish for the research assessment exercise, meddling micro-management, benchmarking and bottomless bureaucracy mean that there is no room for originality and ambition?
