While a new awards scheme to recognise the achievements of people working in higher education is very welcome, The Times Higher awards are not the first such awards, nor has the sector "had to make do with specialist honours in a number of fields" as you report ("The Highers set to roll out red carpet for HE", February 25).
The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme, which has existed since 2000, has rewarded 130 individuals from universities and colleges for their excellence in teaching with awards worth ?50,000.
We are delighted that you are seeking to reward excellence - but those who contribute so much to the student experience have not been unrewarded all this time.
