Having identified himself as formative in the initiation of talks between Sinn Fein and the Government, Simon Lee puts his alleged bridging of the two sections of what was then the Liverpool Institute of Higher Education into historical perspective - the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the end of apartheid and peace in Northern Ireland ("V-c proud to be a pioneer", December 17).
Given that few people would identify self-irony with the now vice-chancellor of Leeds Met, one can only wonder if the new year will see him sallying forth with trusted sidekick to do battle with the fire-breathing dragons of the Pennines, aka wind turbines. On reflection, however, even Don Quixote would refrain from delusions of self-grandeur that place efforts to overcome any division at Liverpool Hope University College within such a chain of events.
