Re “Lecturers ‘missing’ learning strategies used by poorer students” (News, 12 January).

Undergraduates from poor backgrounds have to take paid employment a significant part of the time during their study; they are, in effect, part-time learners. Students from middle-class backgrounds, especially the upper middle class, have no such financial anxiety and diversions; they are simply continuing their private-school education.

Learners from poor backgrounds must abruptly switch on and off between learning and earning. It’s discontinuous learning.
