The government this week called for universities to provide a minimum period of work experience for all students. In a speech at a conference on "shaping the future" at Exeter University, secretary of state for education and employment David Blunkett said a graduate apprenticeship should be piloted. "Many universities already make a first-rate job of bridging the gap between higher education and the workplace, but it is essential that opportunities are made available across the board."
