Two of the five 2004 Balzan prizes, worth €650,000 each (?440,000), have been awarded to Britons. Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorn received the prize for prehistoric archaeology, and Michael Marmot won an award for "seminal contributions" to epidemiology. The other winners were Nikki Keddie (US) for Islamic studies, Pierre Deligne (Belgium) for mathematics and Italy's Sant'Egidio Community for its work in promoting international and inter-religious understanding. The prizes are funded by the Italo-Swiss Balzan Foundation.
