The number of home students starting a postgraduate course is up by 4.8 per cent this year, mainly at the masters level. Higher Education Funding Council figures show the number of students enrolled for a research-based PhD has fallen by 4.4 per cent. Total research masters and taught masters courses have increased by 0.9 per cent.
