I HAD assumed that by now some more balanced response would have greeted the self-serving bluster about the QAA in your issues of March and April 3.

The salaries and universities of Mantz Yorke and Sir Stewart Sutherland are funded from the public purse. Millions of their fellow citizens labour to pay over a proportion of their relatively low incomes so that university teachers shall enjoy a rather comfortable working life. And in most cases the children of those who pay taxes will not benefit from its expenditure on universities. Some obligations arise, then, don't they? Or should we just stick with "Trust me, I'm a university teacher" ?
