Call to combat animal rights extremists
Scientists have urged the home secretary to strengthen proposed laws to combat animal rights extremists. The Research Defence Society said the laws, debated in the Commons today, will tackle only four of the 20 tactics used by the extremists.

Students warned not to leak royal stories
St Andrews University students could face expulsion if they leak stories about Prince William, who begins a history of art degree there in the autumn. New principal Brian Lang is giving up his official residence to enable the history of art school to be housed in one building.

Footballers' trial delayed
The trial of three Leeds United footballers charged with assaulting 19-year-old student Sarfraz Najeib, due to start at Hull Crown Court today, was delayed by legal argument. Lee Bowyer, 24,  Jonathan Woodgate, 21, and Tony Hackworth, 20, deny charges of  grievous bodily harm with intent and affray.
