University libraries are saving more than Pounds 3 million a year by clubbing together regionally to coordinate spending on books and periodicals, according to a Bournemouth University report.
Although some consortia have operated for more than ten years, most started more recently. Eight consortia spent just more than Pounds 31 million on purchasing books last year. By dealing with groups of suppliers they achieved Pounds 2.8 million savings. They spent Pounds 36 million on periodicals, saving Pounds 652,000. The report concludes that there is scope for further savings.
