Canada's supreme court has ruled against Harvard University in its long fight to win a Canadian patent for a genetically engineered mouse. The "oncomouse" has been patented in much of Europe, the US, Japan and New Zealand. Canada's biotech industry said the ruling would stifle investment. However, the country's medical research council said the potential savings on licence fees would allow researchers to better compete with larger operations.
