The number of women on full-time higher education courses with support from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland rose from 44,500 in 1992-93 to 59,300 in 1998-99, while the number of male students rose from 44,300 to 51,500. The proportion of women has grown from 50 per cent to 54 per cent.
In 1998-99, the majority of all students, 69 per cent, were in Scottish higher education institutions.
