Giuseppe D'Ascenzo, rector of La Sapienza University, has signed a new statute for the promotion of some 700 graduate technicians in medicine to fully tenured university researchers. The legislation is being contested by Italy's 1,500 lettori, who were recently refused a similar solution on the grounds that promotion was only possible through competitive state examinations, or concorsi.
