Canny criteria

Paul Shakeshaft is correct that formless, non-specific objectives and criteria will breed anxiety and conformity among students (Letters, April 16). But it is dangerous to imply this is endemic in fine art degrees.

At Ulster University, a range of rigorous criteria covering skills and their appropriate application, engagement with visual languages and contexts, ability to set goals and carry out visual research, and the development of an individual practice, produce ambitious students sure of course aims and degree shows that stand comparison with any; and with, blessedly, no restrictive house style.
