I was saddened to read of the death of Julian Ayer, stepson of philosopher A. J. Ayer, in the tsunami. I remember Julian as a kind and enthusiastic young lecturer at Middlesex Polytechnic in the early Seventies. More recently he championed the pro-European cause in the Conservative Party. He will be missed.
