The University of Michigan law school acted legally when it took race into account when deciding which students to admit, a federal appeal court ruled this week.

The court overturned an earlier ruling that the school's admissions policy discriminated against white applicants.

The issue is likely to be reviewed by the Supreme Court after admissions policies designed to counter ethnic imbalances were overturned by two other appeals courts covering six states.
