More than 12,000 extra students will be admitted to Greek universities and higher education colleges in September, bringing the total to 74,000, a rise of 18.8 per cent. The plan is for a student population to 85,000 by 2000. The new students will be absorbed in 62 new departments, 41 of which will operate in 1999-2000, the rest in 2000-01.
