One hundred and first, and last, in our series of literary sideswipes comes from that noted dispenser of joie de vivre and bonhomie, Friedrich Nietzsche, who demonstrated in Twilight of the Gods (1889) the insights gained in 15 years as first student then professor at the universities of Bonn, Leipzig and Basel: "What is the task of all higher education? To make a man into a machine. What are the means employed? He is taught how to suffer being bored."
