A simple but powerful calculator for a computer screen has been designed by scientists at Cardiff University.

TrianaCalc is as easy to use as a pocket calculator and as powerful as a computer. It can do anything from simple arithmetic to the complex processing of large files of data and the graphical display of results.

It has 90 built-in functions and 50 built-in constants that can perform specialised calculations in, for example, astronomy, physics, chemistry and statistics.

Unlike a calculator with up to 45 data and function buttons, users of TrianaCalc simply type in an expression. For example, to find out the logarithm of 0.533, users type "log(0.533)". It recognises important numbers by name, for example "pi".

TrianaCalc was designed in the department of physics and astronomy. It contains fundamental constants, such as: the speed of light; Newton's gravitational constant; the charge of a proton; and the masses of the sun and earth.
