Cambridge University vice-chancellor Sir Alec Broers has promised training for managers after a wide-ranging staff and student "equality audit" uncovered shortcomings.

An unpublished report by Schneider-Ross on gender and race inequalities at Cambridge identified management skills shortages as a key area of concern. The report has made a number of recommendations to improve practice, Sir Alec Broers revealed this week.

He said in his annual address to staff: "We are not doing justice to the talent we have at Cambridge if we take a 'sink or swim' attitude to career development... We need to invest more time to ensure that those who influence the careers of others are properly trained to do so with complete fairness."
