In The THES last week, we incorrectly calculated the pay rise for Sir Kenneth Calman, vice-chancellor of the University of Durham. It was actually 3 per cent, taking his pay to ?142,000. We apologise for the error.

The emoluments of Dai John, director of Luton University, included the university's contribution to his national insurance and pension. Excluding this figure, Dr John received a 11.7 per cent pay rise, which took his salary to ?110,000. Eight people at Luton earned more than ?50,000.

The emoluments of Ian Johnston, principal of Glasgow Caledonian University, included the university's contribution to his pension. The university has calculated a 6.9 per cent pay rise, taking his pay to ?112,000.

The emoluments of Richard Shaw, principal of the University of Paisley, also included the employer's pension contribution. Excluding this figure, Professor Shaw received a 4.2 per cent pay rise, which took his salary to ?100,000.

The figures for heads of institutions in Scotland were supplied by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council; calculations were performed by The THES.
