Early start on the cards

The brightest A-level students could begin their higher education early by attending university part time, under government plans announced by Charles Clarke, the Education Secretary. He revealed this week that he is considering asking Russell Group universities to offer preliminary courses to high-flying A-level students. The plan echoes comments earlier this year from Mike Tomlinson, the former chief inspector of schools, who is leading an inquiry into the reform of the 14-to-19 exam system. Mr Tomlinson said teaching by age group could eventually be replaced by teaching by stage, to enable younger students to enter university.
