The Northern Ireland Economic Council has this week slated the lack of government funding for research and development in the province. Its report says that, while private sector spending has risen, there has been a drop in spending by Northern Ireland departments and in core funding for university research. The council urges "increased commitment" to public research and development. Gerry McKenna, vice-chancellor of Ulster University, welcomed the council's comments.
