A DNA test to detect the presence of cannabis was just one of the innovations unveiled at Edinburgh's International Science Festival, writes Jennifer Currie.

Strathclyde University's genetic fingerprinting of cannabis was one of ten proposals covering life sciences chosen out of more than 90 submitted by universities nationwide.

Joining forces for the first time with Technology Ventures, the ten near-complete university research projects were showcased in an attempt to encourage industry links.

Patricia Erskine, chief executive of Technology Ventures, said: "Scottish universities are starting to use their own research as a possible source of income. The festival gives us the chance to increase business community interest."
