Engineers and poets are endowment winners

The third round of awards by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts saw 34 projects share ?1.9 million.

University-based winners included Linda Long at Exeter, who is generating music from three-dimensional protein structures, and a team at Sussex that is working on a quantum computing device the size of a wedding ring. An award to Norman Lindsay at Loughborough will help him market an invention to improve golfers' accuracy. Other projects ranged from engineering to poetry.

Nesta is funded by ?10 million from the National Lottery.
