One in eight of Europe's 576 butterfly species is under threat according to research.

The plight of butterflies and moths was discussed last weekend at the international symposium of the British charity Butterfly Conservation at Lancaster University.

The findings pinpointed habitat fragmentation as a major factor. Martin Warren, director of conservation with Butterfly Conservation, said:

"Butterflies react quickly to a changing environment, giving us vital clues to the implications of habitat fragmentation on a whole host of other wildlife."

Among the UK butterflies in danger are the large blue, marsh fritillary and Lulworth skipper.
