Students at Florence University have accused academics of "callousness" and "indifference" when they continued with oral examinations after a 23-year-old student died of heart failure while waiting in a corridor.

Lecturers said that they only finished interviews that were already under way. Other staff claimed that many students stood around their dead colleague, smoking cigarettes and grumbling that his death would delay the examinations.
