* Courses in conservation need to involve more work experience and careers advice because of increasing self-employment among graduates, says a report published today. The study, carried out by the Institute of Employment Studies for the Museums and Galleries Commission, shows more than a quarter of such graduates are self-employed. Nearly 20 per cent work in the private sector. Nine out of ten graduates whose course includes an internship were employed in conservation, compared with only half of those who had no work experience.
