The government has launched a project to deliver next-generation smart cards for young people who stay on in education after the age of 16.

Malcolm Wicks, the lifelong learning minister, is championing the scheme, which aims to provide discounts on transport, shops, restaurants and leisure.

The Connexions card will be used as an electronic purse, hold CV information and ease course enrolment. Eight pilot projects have given positive results and the government is urging business to help develop the scheme.
