Guangdong Province's Zhongshan University and Zhongshan Medical University merged last month in an attempt at competing with Beijing, Qinghua, Fudan and Nankai universities. The local government has allocated ?72 million and the education ministry ?22.5 million to improve facilities and attract teachers.
