Hull University is consolidating its strong presence in the arts, humanities and social sciences with academic appointments backed by investment of about ?800,000 in new buildings and equipment, writes Tony Tysome.

The first wave of 14 lecturer posts and academic fellowships, advertised in The Times Higher this week, reflect the university's research ambitions.

The appointments cover lecturing posts in criminology and sociological studies, politics/security studies, politics and international studies.

Hull is also recruiting for social work posts, to support its aim to build one of the country's biggest social science departments.

The second wave of recruitment, due to be advertised in The Times Higher next week, includes chairs in history, law, sociology, media studies, music, philosophy and renaissance literature. There are senior lecturing posts in music, and lectureships in black and minority cultures, law and broadcast journalism.
