Wellcome unveils ?3bn science boost

Biomedical research will get more than ?3 billion from the Wellcome Trust over the next five years. The world’s largest medical charity outlined its intentions with the publication of its first corporate plan today.

Ucas launches course website

Potential students can now find 58,000 further and higher education courses from a single site. The service has been launched by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service and hotcourses.com.

UK needs extra 12,000 midwives

Urgent action is needed to tackle a chronic shortage of midwives and the rising number of Caesarean sections, a conference in Manchester heard today. Karlene Davis, general secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, said another 12,000 midwives were needed.

Scientists call for embryo cloning

The Royal Society is delivering a report to MPs today saying they should be allowed to clone embryos for therapeutic purposes, such as finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease. The report says science cannot turn its back on stem cell research and warns that researchers might move abroad if work is blocked.
