Blair stands up for science
Tony Blair made an “unashamedly pro-science” speech to the Biotechnology Industry Conference in London today. He declared that he would not let the United Kingdom slip into an anti-science stance in the wake of public concerns over BSE, genetic modification and biotechnology.

Conference celebrates&nbsp;women in science
The achievements of women in engineering and science were celebrated today at the Athena Project Conference in London. The conference heard from six schemes under Athena, which&nbsp;focuses on the cultures, policies and personal factors that shape the careers of individual female academics.

UCL partners BT in research centre
University College London is to open a multimillion-pound research and postgraduate centre in Martlesham, Suffolk, in partnership with BTexact, BT's advanced communication technologies arm. The&nbsp;centre&nbsp; — UCL @ Adastral.Park — will house up to 45 students and staff. It is due to open in the spring.
