Rejected Conan Doyle&nbsp;story published
A short story written when Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was an 18-year-old medical student was published for the first time today. The Haunted Grange of Goresthorpe was rejected for publication by Blackwoods Magazine, but remained in the magazine’s archive because the author failed to provide a stamped, addressed envelope.

Government extends health support
Health secretary Alan Milburn will visit Durham University today to see how medical schools are trying to recruit students from a wider social background. Two new medical schools&nbsp;- at Brighton and in Yorkshire - and 1,033 more trainee doctor places were announced today.

Scottish Executive backs medical school
The Scottish Executive's health department is contributing more than ?6 million to help build Glasgow University’s ?14 million medical school. The university is raising the balance for purpose-built facilities for its 2,400 medical students.
