A-level maths not up to scratch
The lack of geometry in the new A and AS-level mathematics courses means students no longer have a suitable foundation for university science and engineering courses, according to a report published today by the Royal Society and the Joint Mathematical Council.

Conservatoire eligible for Hefce cash
An order making the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama eligible for funding&nbsp;by the Higher Education Funding Council came into force yesterday. Its two founding members are the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and London Contemporary Dance School.

Scots medics denied bursaries
The Scottish Executive has refused to pay the bursaries of Scottish graduates on fast-track medical degrees in England. In an attempt to defuse growing anger, a spokesperson said that the executive&nbsp;was considering introducing equivalent degrees in Scotland.

Floud takes helm at UUK
Roderick Floud, provost of London Guildhall University, has taken over as over as president of vice-chancellors' committee Universities UK.&nbsp; Ivor Crewe, vice-chancellor of Essex University, became chairman of UUK’s England and Northern Ireland Council, taking over from Professor Floud.
