Learning a foreign language will become compulsory for 7 to 14-year-olds, Alan Johnson, the Education Secretary, has announced. The move follows a recommendation made by Lord Dearing in his report on languages, which was published this week. An extra ?3 million will go to university schemes to encourage more young people to study for language degrees.
