OECD abolishes lethal animal toxicity test

Use of the much-criticised LD50 Draize oral toxicity test, which involves the death of laboratory animals, has been abolished by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The OECD's chemical committee agreed this week that the test should be phased out over the next year. Tests that reduce the number of animals used and the level of suffering have been developed.
