Student dropout rates will be scrutinised by the Commons education select committee as part of its continuing inquiry into higher education.

Reasons being considered for why students fail to complete their courses include financial considerations and the amount of paid work undertaken by students during termtime.

The ways in which the quality of teaching and the funding of higher education affect dropout rates will also be investigated.

The committee will publish its report on access to higher education in the next few weeks.
